The Governance Handbook states:

“The chair, with support from the vice chair, is responsible for ensuring the effective functioning of the board and has a vital role in setting the highest of expectations for professional standards of governance.”

As experienced Chairs of Governors we strongly believe in providing training that gives you the knowledge, tools and examples to be effective governors. Our aim is to give you the confidence and tools to improve your governance as quickly and effectively as possible.

 

Who is delivering the training?

Rosemary Lovatt is an NLG and led National Leaders of Governance (NLGs) across the East of England and NE London for many years. She is currently Vice Chair of a multi academy trust. She is an experienced governance tutor, chair and trustee who has supported boards across England and has trained thousands of governors and trustees.

For many years, Rosemary delivered the DfE’s Chairs’ Leadership Programme.

 

Content

This comprehensive chair’s programme supports chairs and aspiring chairs of governors to understand their role, giving them knowledge and tools to lead the governance team effectively.

Delivered from a governance perspective, this programme also supports school leaders to understand the role of the board and to work effectively with their governing team.

  • The responsibilities of the chair
  • Building effective relationships
  • Recruitment, retention and development of the team
  • Understanding the ingredients of school improvement
  • Leading the strategic direction of your school or trust

 

Session 2

  • Leading monitoring
  • Getting the right information to be effective
  • How to hold to account
  • Leading effective meetings
  • Planning the governance teams work
  • Governance team structures
  • Your responsibilities as an employer

 

Session 3

  • Understanding your role in resource management and school effectiveness
  • Oversight, scrutiny and monitoring of school finances
  • How to manager risks
  • Ensuring statutory compliance
  • Reflecting on your impact

 

All delegates will receive an electronic copy of the presentation and supporting materials and resources to help them be more impactful in their role as chair, including example meeting planners and agendas, our monitoring plan and monitoring report template, checklists for monitoring the curriculum, example stakeholder survey questions, financial responsibilities checklist, example risk management plan and much more.

 

Who should attend?
Anyone leading a governance team, whether in a standalone school, Multi Academy Trust, or local governing board should attend this training, including the Chair of Governors, Vice Chair of Governors and aspiring chairs. This programme is also highly effective for School Leaders who wish to understand more about the role of the governing board and how to work more effectively with the members of it.

This training will be delivered via Zoom.
